Con Report: Otakon 2012 August 25th, 2012

Otakon, which was July 27-29 this year in Baltimore, MD, is the biggest anime convention on the east coast, and the second biggest in the United States. I always figured I’d go to Otakon some day, but there was never an urgent desire to do so, and I’ve been generally content to put it off year after year. As of 2011, Otakon’s Artist Alley tables are distributed via lottery (to many artists’ frustration), and I entered this year’s lottery on a complete whim. So of course, I get in, and then I just had to go.

But despite my initial indifference, the decision to go was a pretty big deal. There was a lot of risk in the venture because Otakon would easily be my most costly convention ever — even before figuring in the plane ticket and hotel, the combined price of the badge and table is nearly double that of A-kon. But it’s the second biggest con in the country! And I haven’t done an East coast show in ages! And a lot of the SCAD friends I did conventions with in college also got in, and various other East cost people I never get to see are attending, so it would be a good chance to go and hang out with everyone again! All good reasons. It’ll be fun, right?

Shock blanket Sherlock here is going to be your opening picture for this report because why not.

I procrastinated writing this report for forever because I dreaded how long it needed to be… but here. Here it is in its entire 8,635 word glory! (I’m sorry.)

Con Report: A-kon 23 June 18th, 2012

Back-to-back conventions are exhausting affairs, but I think they make up for it by being awesome. Anyway, I definitely had it better than most. As with Easter weekend, there were at least a half dozen conventions over Memorial Day weekend, including Fanime, Animazement, Anime North, and Phoenix Comic Con, so I know for sure that I wasn’t the only artist doing back-to-back shows. But with Comicpalooza as my prior show, at least I was already in the right state for A-kon!

A-kon is the oldest anime convention in the United States.

This report is ~4700 words long. U_U

After two conventions of not having a table, I was back behind one for Comicpalooza this past Memorial Day weekend in Houston. And it was so good to be back! Behind a table, anyway. Sorry, Houston, I still hate your traffic and weather.

Fake Lemonade Stand @ Comicpalooza 2012

It was a mixed bag at Comicpalooza last year, but I still had a good time overall. I was optimistic about this year because the staff seemed very aware of 2011′s various issues and I got the impression they were doing everything they could to fix them for 2012. It being back-to-back with A-kon (which starts tomorrow!) also made it convenient for me… if insanely hectic.

The brevity of this report may be testament to that — I gotta get this done before I leave for A-kon (in two hours!?) so everything doesn’t get muddled in my head. This is only 2,687 words!

Con Report: Sakura-Con 2012 April 15th, 2012

There were a ton of anime conventions over Easter weekend, including Anime Boston, Anime Matsuri, MTAC, and — the one I attended — Sakura-Con here in Seattle, in the same venue as ECCC just last week. And man, Sakura-Con is an aptly named convention. It was a gorgeous weekend, even if we didn’t spend that much time outside. The weather was perfect and everything has been blooming for a few weeks now~.

These aren't actually sakura, but it's close enough!

I, once again (!), did not have an Artist Alley table, but Kiiyame (White Oblivion) did, and she was staying with me for the duration of the con, plus an extra day before and after. As her official table lackey, I would still have a Exhibitor/Artist Alley badge, so hurray for not having to stand in the pre-registration badge pick-up line, which reportedly took three hours to get through on Friday. I also did have space in the Art Show, and it was my first art show, so I was pretty curious as to how that would go. Many exciting* things in this 8,628 word report!

*Excitement not guaranteed.

Con Report: ECCC 2012 April 3rd, 2012

I went to Emerald City Comic Con this past weekend for Saturday only. It was the first convention in, count ‘um, nineteen conventions, where I wasn’t behind a table. The last convention I attended without a table was MomoCon 2008 — apparently four years ago! o_o To be sure, I would have been tabling if I had known about it sooner, but I didn’t know I’d be local for the con until September, and tables had been sold out a while by then.

Not that I’m complaining. It was really refreshing being able to attend a con as just an attendee again, if still ridiculously exhausting.

I guess this was also my first time as a normal attendee at a comic con (as opposed to an anime con). One of the things that kind of surprised me was the relatively short hours. ECCC’s Saturday hours were from 10am to 7pm — just nine hours. The sun wouldn’t even be down when the show closed! Meanwhile, many anime cons run twenty-four hours over the course of the weekend, with mostly-video and gaming programming running late into the night. I mean, ECCC had plenty of after-hours, unofficial happenings, mostly at local bars, but those don’t really count. This basically highlights the difference in demographics, I guess. Anime cons = high school and college kids partying it up with minimal supervision. Comic cons = fans and professionals of a wider age range, 20′s-60′s and beyond, coming together to geek out, make connections, and… buy a ton of things.

This report is just shy of 5,000 words long.
