DAISO brush pens, part II May 14th, 2013

So, as predicted, I stopped by DAISO Japan again and picked up every brush pen I didn’t already have. This post is only about one of them though — yes, this pen is just amazing enough to get its own post.

This pen is amazing.

This pen is amazing.

The packaging here is nearly identical to the “pocket brush pen” from last time, but these two pens are completely different. While the other pocket brush was very similar to the Tombow Fudenosuke or the Kuretake Fudegokochi, this “flexi-brush” is much more comparable to the fabled Pentel Pocket Brush or the Kuretake #13. Yes, really.

A platform for commissions April 29th, 2013

About a year ago, I was invited to beta test ArtistsnClients.com and to provide feedback for its development team. I did so with more gusto than expected.

AnC is basically a reverse Elance for the hobbyist and semi-professional art market. I want to call it the “fandom art market,” which I’m sure is a very poor term for it, but you know what I’m talking about. AnC is aimed primarily at the artists that have, over the years, peddled their wares on sites like Livejournal, deviantART, FurAffinity, and most recently, Tumblr. It aims to provide a better platform to facilitate commission transactions, which are frequently rife with problems, many stemming from the simple fact that none of these other sites were made to handle commissions.

ArtistsnClients.com

The site launched to the public in late July and has been growing quietly since then, adding and implementing new features on a fairly regular basis. In January, deviantART launched its own platform for commissions — it’s pretty awful, but dA is the big fish in the pond, and people will use their platform because they’re young, poorly-informed, and already on the site. AnC is the little fish, and while it’s also not a perfect platform, it’s off to a far better start. So I think it’s worth talking about, because there really does need to be a better way to deal with commissions on the Internet.

It’s hard for me to resist stopping by DAISO Japan anytime I’m downtown. For those who don’t know, DAISO is a 100 yen store. They have a couple of locations in the US, including two in Seattle, and it’s basically a $1.50 store full of random Japanese stuff. (The yen has recently fallen against the dollar; if it stays that way, will it become a real dollar store??) They have a ton of items that are really useful for conventions, like price label stickers, containers, gift bags and stuff, but they also have a nice collection of stationary and office supplies.

And recently I noticed they carried some “made for DAISO” brush pens. $1.50 is damn cheap for a brush pen! They carried four or five different ones, but I grabbed two to start:

Mysterious DAISO Japan brush pens.

Introductory fountain pens December 6th, 2012

I wasn’t planning on stopping by Kinokuniya, and I definitely wasn’t planning on buying fountain pens, but I ended up with a Pilot Varsity with black ink and a 0.5 Platinum Preppy with blue ink anyway. Whelp.

Kinokuniya has test pens you can play around with for most of the pens and pencils they sell, so I knew after a few lines that neither of these are really suited for drawing. Aside from my random stints in typography and lettering, which these pens are also not especially suited for, I don’t do a lot of actual pen-on-paper writing… I think the only stuff I write on a regular basis is to-do lists, and I have a dozen cheap Bic pens that are more than suitable for that.

But fountain pens look and feel so neat. And…I-I really can’t think of another excuse. I knew I didn’t need these pens, and I  knew they would be cheaper on Jetpens even if I did, but will power and logic only get you so far when you’re already holding the thing in your hands.

So JetPens has graciously sent me one of these beauties to review, as if I needed another reason to adore them.  The Kuretake #13 had actually been on my to-get list  for a while because I wanted to compare it with my trusty Pentel pocket brush, the only other synthetic hair brush pen I own (all the others are felt tips).

Kuretake #13 Fountain Brush Pen

The Pentel is an amazing pen and I love it, but it’s best suited for bolder, looser brush work. It’s hard to use it for precision work, so I was hoping the Kuretake would make up that difference.
