Con Report: Sakura-Con 2013 April 18th, 2013

Easter came early this year, so Sakura-Con was March 29th through 31st at the Washington State Convention Center here in Seattle. And despite being early, it was still the perfect spring weekend for the aptly named convention — the skies were clear, the weather was mild, and everything was blooming! I guess it’s nice for out-of-town visitors to miss all the overcast days and persistent drizzling. Most people don’t like that kind of weather, apparently??

Sakura-Con’s program.

Last year at Sakura-Con, I helped my friend Kiiyame with her table all weekend and had a few pieces in the Art Show, but I didn’t have an Artist Alley table of my own. I made sure I got a table for this year though, and I was extra excited for the con because after ECCC, it was a show back in my ‘home’ subculture. And besides, Kara, Sloan, and Tori were all staying with me for the weekend. Yay! Friends visiting! Yay! Conventions are literally my only social life! 8D

Con Report: ECCC 2013 April 15th, 2013

Emerald City Comic Con, which was March 1-3 here in Seattle, took the “biggest show I’ve ever done” title from last year’s Otakon, and was a huge jump up from Comicpalooza, the next biggest comic convention I’ve done. Last year, I went as an attendee for Saturday only and had a fabulous time, but tabling is another story entirely, and I was more than a little apprehensive that this would be my first con of the year.

Comic cons are still outside my comfort genre and demographic! I don’t know very many others going! 60,000 attendees is a lot of freakin’ attendees! Aaaaaaaaa!

Well, here we go...

Con Report: IKKiCON 7 January 20th, 2013

After a brief stint last year at the AT&T Convention Center on the edge of the University of Texas campus, IKKiCON returned to the downtown Hilton Austin for the weekend before New Years, December 28-30.

You know, now that I don’t live there anymore,  I can really appreciate that there is basically a Texas convention for every month of the year, which means I can hit up a con (or two) every time I go down to visit. A-kon is the juggernaut that I’d go out of my way for anyway, but it lands nicely in the middle of the year, and IKKiCON is six months after that. How convenient and evenly spaced! Some people worry that IKKiCON being smack between two major holidays hurts attendance, but I’ve never gotten that impression…and I mean, a majority of other conventions are on holiday weekends too?

Con Report: Aki Con 2012 January 16th, 2013

Oh boy.

So Aki Con was a small, local anime convention that took place over October 26-28 across the lake at the Bellevue Hilton. It was one of the most frustrating weekends ever, and I wasn’t the only one that felt that way. The backlash from artists in the week following the con was pretty damn vicious. Things have settled down since then, but only because time has passed, and not because any of the issues have been resolved. I was really busy in the time leading up to the con, and was really busy after  — this is the longest I’ve ever delayed writing a con report, and for any other con, I think I would have just given up and let it go, but if any con needs to be written about, it’s Aki Con.

The most relevant photo of the convention.

This is the most relevant photo of the convention.

And in fact, many, many, many others already have, in a much more timely manner than I. There is both a Tumblr and a Facebook group dedicated to calling out Aki Con on its bullshit astonishing lack of professionalism. I’m told a lot that I’m the only person who writes about artist experiences at conventions so extensively, so I think the fact that this many others have written about Aki Con is proof enough that it’s a convention with some really serious issues.

This report is 8,228 words long, to the surprise of exactly no one.

Con Report: Jet City Comic Show October 24th, 2012

September 22nd was Jet City Comic Show, a small, one-day show a short ride away in downtown Seattle.

I spent most of August totally burnt out from Otakon and most of September was a fervor of unreasonable work deadlines, so other than some half-hearted recounting/verification of inventory, I did pretty much nothing to prepare for JCCS. I really didn’t know what to expect anyway. Other than what’s on their website, I couldn’t find much about the show online. I actually thought it was a first-year show because of the lack of general information, but 2012 is apparently JCCS’s third year. No details (especially regarding attendance) is usually a cause for concern for worryworts like me, but JCCS was such a low-risk venture as a local (especially coming on the heels of Otakon) that I really didn’t think much on it.

It’s whatever! Let’s just go and have fun or something, geez.

Shockingly, I did not see a single Loki cosplayer this entire show.

This report is a relatively manageable 1,853 words.
